Re: The (Windmill Hill) Welsh Highland Railway

Hello again... Yesterday evening came the anticipated test running of the full slate train - rather latter than planned, in failing light, so I'm afraid these photos aren't great... First the wagons were assembled in Penlan's loop - 12 mixed slate wagons, 9 from the FR and 3 WHR examples: Slate test...

Re: (WH)WHR Rolling Stock

Interesting isn't it? I'm tempted by the timber bolsters too, they'd make a nice model. I think one of the Ashbury brakes ended up as a bogie flat for timber too, could make for an interesting train... I've realised that you were quite right, by the way, it is an Ashbury the FR are building, so the ...

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?

I'm experiencing a strange sensation of genuinely wishing I was 3" tall so I could put down a deposit on a house in your village and move in... It'll be a model village in both senses of the word - a miniature recreation but also model "in the sense of an ideal to which other developments ...

Glad you like the wagons, thanks for the feedback! That spot's about the only photogenic location on the railway at the moment - I've been including the baby's tears with the marigolds when I've been watering! Sounds like your WHR/NWNGR train's coming along nicely JMORG - have you got any photos? My...

All done! I finished weathering the completed slate wagons last night, so here's a couple of pictures of the whole rake: Slate wagons complete 1.jpg Slate wagons complete 2.jpg I've already got two Binnie ones and a couple of larger 3 ton wagons from PMVR, as well as three wooden bodied WHR wagons, ...

Re: Semi-scale BR: Summer Steam Gala!

This is fantastic, I love the whole semi-scale "aesthetic" you've created, it really works. The engines are beauties, but that rake of carriages and the DMU are lovely too. I shouldn't worry about a narrative - it's just a stretch of mainline (North Devon? Cornwall?), no back-story require...

Re: RWLR - Robin Wood Light Railway

Hi all, I'd agree that any shine disappears after a short while - either that or I soon stopped noticing! I've got two lengths of SBR-ed ballast, the bit in Clarach station which I wanted to look relatively newly-ballasted, and the bit from Penlan tunnel to under the apple tree, which I wanted to lo...

Yeah, the upper bit was felted after that photo was taken, and that's above ground, so I'm hopeful that'll be OK - you never know, the damage may only be cosmetic...

Re: The (Windmill Hill) Welsh Highland Railway

Funny you should mention Peter Jones, his work and writing has been on my mind in recent days, and in particular his preference for massive works of civil engineering in concrete! I clearly need to do something a little more permanent than decking board, but I think whatever charm the line possesses...

Re: The (Windmill Hill) Welsh Highland Railway

Thanks chaps... Strangely, I'm not down-hearted, it feels like an opportunity in many ways. And yes, I think a revived Russell will really help. It's one of the reasons I'm delaying making a decision on how to proceed - my main motivation in getting a Slomo is to aid realistic end-to-end running, bu...

Re: Tin Turtle Load Test

The FR version has been done and there was an illustrated method put up on a forum (or was it in the 16mm assn magazine?). In essence he drilled a line of holes on the entrance side and cut between them to remove the doors, the rest is lots of cleaning up the edges with a file. You would need to pl...

Re: Vintage tractor size?

Thanks folks, I'm glad I asked!

There's nowhere for my tractor to go at the moment, but a future rebuild of parts of the railway (see the (WH)WHR thread!) may result in some more scenic space, and I rather fancy a barn, so perhaps that's the route I'll go down...

The Newqidas have been reallocated to the Skebawn and Castleknox and will slowly appear in late 1950s CIE Green. Several of the Cavan and Leitrim's coaches - the ones that had been rebodied at Inchicore using stuff plundered from Broadstone bus depot's scrap pile, ended up in dark green, I am just ...

Re: The (Windmill Hill) Welsh Highland Railway

Hello! Over the weekend I found some time to get out into the garden and undertake some long overdue maintenance on the line. All did not go quite according to plan... The main task (I so I thought) was to re-affix the slate cladding to the decking planters that form the landscape that separates my ...

Oooh, I'd missed this - I love a good Faller railcar conversion, and this one's fantastic, it looks brilliant, love the skirts. My own Faller railcar was just a very simple repaint job about twenty years ago, but I'm still very fond of it, and it's my wife's favourite. The colour scheme plans sound ...

That's looking great! I was tempted before, didn't realise they were so powerful though, I'm even more tempted now! I'd want to try to recreate the FR's version during one of its forays on to the WHR, so would need to model it without doors I think, don't know how easy that would be... https://hfste...

Re: Vintage tractor size?

Hello again... I measured it up and thought it might just do, at a push, so purchased my toy tractor for the princely sum of £2 - I even haggled a little, most unlike me! Here it is in the garden - posed on the platform because I don't really have any fields or roads, and with a selection of figures...
