Re: NGG16
I have no idea what that means, even with the picture   Since the yanks don't speak english, they call a flangeless driving wheel on a loco a 'blind driver'......... The prototype NGG16 has flanges on all driving wheels and will go around a 2 chain curve, so unless you are using ...

Re: Little brass handwheels
Does anyone know if there is a business who supplies little brass handwheels, like the ones found on locomotives and in ships? I mean the kind upon which one of the spokes sticks out farther than the others. I'm not aware of any hand wheels that are available to directly fit RH gas valves, or other...

Re: TVT - Mt Delusion O&K
I'm intrigued by the diagonal timbers on top of each load. Are they used to tighten the straps, somehow? The period I model is the late 20's, when Aust. was in a building boom, just before the Yanks lost the plot as usual and dropped everyone into the great depression. No straps back then AFAIK, ju...

Thealcohol will of course evapourate quickly, but I wonder if the Methyl Salicylate might linger and slowly build up? I don't know about that, I'm just thinking out loud. Methyl Salicylate (oil of wintergreen) is an oily liquid with a boiling point of about 220degC. Unless it forms an azeotrope wit...

Re: TVT - Mt Delusion O&K
The weather here is well down the slope towards winter, but yesterday dawned clear and calm, and as cold as charity. A good day to boil some water........... The O&K has been running in on the bench and had one test run on the track. The only speed bump on the road of progress was that somehow I...

Ivan made a range of steel and white metal diesel models back in the 'oughties. Older versions of the IP Engineering website are archived in the Wayback Machine. Re: Sand Quarry Extension
I did wonder whether to change history even more by discovering deposits of silver amongst the copper at the mine. Might make for some interesting additional 'secure' train movements..... Silver is more likely to turn up with lead and zinc in metal ores, although it can turn up with copper. It's no...

Re: Ooops! - I have bought this
I'm intrigued when it says the loco has to be reversed "manually". Does that mean "pushed"? Yes, the valve gear is slip eccentrics, mounted outside. You push the loco in the direction you want it to go, which sets the eccentrics, then you open the regulator to start it moving. W...

Re: 3D printed motor block
When climbing my 1:40 gradients I was having to open the throttle to full power with a fairly modest train and even then it slowed to a crawl. Hmmm......... MFA-Como motors aren't easily available in Oz, so I've never used a 918D and hadn't realised they were so gutless. I can see why Piko motor bl...

Anyway, a few days ago I forgot about what had gone before First Law of Holes. 'If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.' I've got a couple of rolling chassis sitting on my bench slowly building up a nice patina....... Have you worked out how to fit a motor, ESC and batteries in the model? It ...

Re: 3D printed motor block
Although it worked well, I found it didn't have enough power at 12v for some of my longer goods trains which is why I opted for the larger MFA motor. What do you mean by not enough power? Did the loco stall with a heavy load, or did it wheel slip to a stop, as the fix is different. Stalling - not e...

Re: Coal Hopper from the Hunter Valley Australia
Inspiration hit me at 3am; why try to make my own brake van when I could just use the GVT one in 3D print files. How high are the models 15mm and 16mm, not sure of the scale of the hopper wagon? The designer helpfully describes the non-air hopper model as G gauge......... It's a standard gau...

Re: TVT - Mt Delusion O&K
I never realised how much surface area there is to paint on a paddler, acres and acres and in this weather. Steam locos are heat resistant, I force dry the paint in the oven in this weather. I didn't see any water in the compressor filters while I was painting last week, but there was certainly som...

This model has been sitting in the paint shop queue for far too long, but it has finally received a coat of paint...... As predicted, it has joined the Mt. Delusion Timber Co. fleet. The sun has reappeared temporarily between cold fronts and the photos below show the O&K sitting for it's ...

Re: A tiny G gauge indoor layout
;) ;) ;) ;) Fences should be just a few strands of barbed wire, but maybe a post and rail would be the ticket in front of a wheatfield. I'll try raising the scene up a bit and then add some bushes (not hedges !) The scenery looks pretty good. I'm not that familiar with NSWGR practice. The VR usually...

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
The original green paint wouldn't accept grey primer, even after sanding, so it all had to be removed. Nitromors would barely touch it, so scraping and rubbing with wire-wool was the only way forward. Eventually it was clean enough to start all over again.... Don't you just love modern paints? It l...

The Climax seemed to be in very good shape, and what a fascinating engine to watch. I find them the least awkward-looking of the three main types of geared American locomotive. I was lucky enough to get a cab ride on 1694 on the Puffing Billy line when it ran a work train years ago, just after it's...

Re: Little Wonder
I had dismissed a mechanical hacksaw as taking too much room - but I will think about a band saw. Unlike power hacksaws, the 6x4 bandsaws are lighter and have a couple of wheels at the back so can be moved around fairly easily. Mine lives out of the way under the router table when not in use. There...
