Re: A weighty question

Rob, A box of SM32 Peco track is probably 3kg packed. ParcelForce charge like a wounded bull and the postage will at least double the UK price. Even with the current exchange rate (and no VAT) advantage, it will be about the same as the Aust. retail price by the time it arrives. Have you checked Per...

Re: Large Gas Burner

That sounds about the same size as an Accucraft Garratt or NG15 boiler. They got around this problem by fitting two burners. Garratts have two sets of cylinders, so require twice the steam. From Accucraft's point of view it was probably easier to fit two standard burners than design a new burner wi...

Like I said its not superheated so the Roundhouse cylinders just sap the wet steam. Roundhouse cylinders are all the same size, even with different size boilers, so their standard burner should have no problem steaming a pair of their cylinders. Is it possible to reroute the steam pipe and run it d...

Hiya. I tried some larger jets in the FG to no avail. I am starting ro think the boiler is flawed due to its size and lack of superheating. I've but the project on hold till I get clearance from the owner for a larger burner. Probably means that the FG burner can't get any more air to make the extr...

Re: fibre washers

in need of some fibre washers as currently the loco makes a nice hot water spitting feature    where does one obtain such items these days? I bought some red fibre washers recently from one of the local car accessory shops in 3/16", 1/4" & 5/16" ID sizes. No idea what the e...

Re: Large Gas Burner

Im just finished setting up a large 0-8-0 freelance loco for a freind. The boiler is absoloutly massive 7" long by 2.5" diameter with a 3/4" centre flue. Wondered if anybody knew where I can source a larger burner to suit such a loco. What size are the cylinders compared to Roundhous...

Argyle Locomotive Works "Philadelphia". They've been out of production for close to 10 years, but I agree they run well when set up properly. Details of the model are still online in the Wayback machine archive. http://replay.web.archive.org/20020409081124/http://www.argyleloco.com.au/phi...

What was actually going through my head was how many little wagons the engine could handle around the garden, and also all the guys at work asking things about horsepower and tractive effort (they are aeroplane mechanics). Science content warning........... On reasonably clean rail the kine...

Re: Protecting my lining?

Does anyone have any suggestions for how i can protect the lines? Should I paint over them with some humbrol or Revell gloss or matt varnish? Or would that look really bad? That's a nice lining job. Well done. ;) The lining on real locos slowly wore down as they were cleaned, but that may not be th...

Re: Crosshead grub screw problem

I highly doubt the reg on my edrig gets that hot! and the locktite still doesn't like the heat on it! The Henkel tech data sheet for Loctite retaining compounds recommends heating to 250 degC and removing while hot. Saturated steam temperature is about 140degC at 40 psi and at that temperature Loct...

Re: Crosshead grub screw problem

ive got the allen key to fix this, except the grub screw wont move - locktight? ive tried soaking it in WD40 for 24hrs but that hasnt worked WD40 might free a joint frozen by corrosion, but would be unlikely to shift Loctite. Loctite is chemically similar to acrylic plastics (perspex) and the usual...

Re: Tender Project

Only snag is that I don't have the dimensions from which I can base something off; would anyone here [especially as this forum seems to have a very strong FR connection *wards off evil*] happen to be able to give dimensions or obtain them or have any 16mm scale drawings? There was an Ian Beattie dr...

So Mamod factory paint WAS lead?   Unlikely by that time in something that would be classified as a toy. After white lead was banned from paint in the 60's, the only lead based paints around were usually yellow or orange in colour. Anyway lead is the least of your worries, as there are some ...

Its what I'm thinking as well. Need to swap out the IOM wheels & try a similar size accy W&L set in there. The W&L (& L&B) wheelsets are much finer than the rather course looking IOM wheelsets. If the IOM wheels have thicker flanges, they'll need a narrower back to back, assumin...

What are the actual values for the radius of curves in 16mm scale, R1, R2 etc? Converting into units I can visualise and then rounding off, LGB R1 is 2', R2 is 2'6", R3 is 4' and R5 is 7'6". SM32/SM45 is 1:19 scale, so multiply the LGB radius by 19 to get the nominal prototype radius. It ...

Thanks for the ideas. They got me thinking and I found this advert in an old Railway Modeller. http://members.optusnet.com.au/graemetbrown/FowlerAdvert.jpg Looks like Tom Cooper sold them for a couple of years in the late '80s under his Steamlines business, after he parted company with Merlin. No id...

Unknown Fowler Petrol-Mechanical Loco

Can anyone help me identify the maker of this model of a Fowler petrol-mechanical loco? http://members.optusnet.com.au/graemetbrown/FowlerPM.jpg It bears some resemblance to the ESSEL Engineering Fowler model, especially in the drive arrangement, but it is nowhere near as detailed. Bodywork is a mix...
