Re: "Garden Rail" 1994 Ross Harrison's 16mm Hunslet (Lilla)

Thank you Tony! That's very interesting. I would love to know more about ( - better to learn from other people's mistakes :D ): ...poor chassis design... Pleased to hear, that she now : ...runs very nicely... I presume that 3/8" dia cylinder (when compared with RH 9/16" ??) wasn't "th...

Re: "Garden Rail" 1994 Ross Harrison's 16mm Hunslet (Lilla)

bit of an addendum... info that came up on Yahoo group: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Steammodelloco16mm/conversations/messages/34514 and for those who are not members: ...The Ross Harrison Lilla builds into quite a good representation of the prototype. Lovely indeed :thumbright:
Am I correct in thinking that it is 1:22.5 running on 45mm gauge (prototype 1000mm gauge)?

Re: "Garden Rail" 1994 Ross Harrison's 16mm Hunslet (Lilla)

...That's more like watchmaking than modelling....... yeah :) It was just a feasibility study and I am beginning to think 7/8" version on 45mm track might be more interesting proposition. This would btw make it comparable to LBSC's Tich but on narrow gauge instead standard gauge :thumbright: ....

Well... it might be doable indeed :) Modelled first approximation and the layout looks like this: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/2_C6-03oy6yglTwv95aUBAnfCL9GEg3x5LKMJUQ5C3OXZp4ZtDx5KvbznqrU2Hs7wIJj9p8P4Yb8dGJcuE4pbZ0lgES-nu3gfkTv1Wbs9IHkXZtRPPTDVSw1w-zQtX2WEFyDFFi00gc=w2400 It's all based on gaug...

Re: "Garden Rail" 1994 Ross Harrison's 16mm Hunslet (Lilla)

Hmmm, interesting. Like you, I also suspect it has problems, having seen the drawing... basically you have full forward and full backward with nothing in between, but this is not really much different to most of the "simplified" valve gears used in 16mm locos? ...It looks like the width o...

Very tidy work :thumbright:
Copper will be more difficult to solder because it conducts the heat away very well.

Re: "Garden Rail" 1994 Ross Harrison's 16mm Hunslet (Lilla)

...No direct experience of the Ross Harrison designs. I've got a vague idea I've read about valve gear problems... I suspected that there may be some problems, hence my questions here... The valve gear described by Greenly seems a bit complicated for what it does... Here the layout of the gear for ...

Re: "Garden Rail" 1994 Ross Harrison's 16mm Hunslet (Lilla)

He has also designed 3 1/2"gauge and 7 1/4"gauge versions of Lilly. I like his design for 32mm gauge, because: 1. it seems designed by model engineer for model engineers, rather than commercial product designed to cut costs 2. it has ingenious "single eccentric link, reversing gear, f...

"Garden Rail" 1994 Ross Harrison's 16mm Hunslet (Lilla)

I am looking through old issues of Garden Rail and there is an interesting design for 16mm Hunslet quarry engine (named "Lilla" in the magazine series starting with issue 10 Sept 1994).
I was wondering whether anybody has ever build one and can comment on it?

Re: Cleaning after using super glue

Stainless steel sewing pin to seal the nozzle (instead of the provided cap) - as long as the nozzle hole is no bigger than the dia of the pin.
Use one with big plastic ball for the head not the all metal pin (easier to pull to open)
Also keep the glue in the fridge.

just had reply from Tenmille:

Unfortunately we no longer supply this rail due to low demand. We can supply bullhead rail instead in case this is of interest to you.

Re: bambuko loco works 0-6-2 (Fowler)

Sure, it's an old technique for wetting/tinning stuff with soft solder. The modern enhancement is to use silicone brush, which allows you to work the solder without burning the brush :) Rather than use many words to describe the technique, below is the link to Youtube vid showing the thing in action...

Thank you GTB , for detailed response! ...Since you are building a Fowler that ran on a cane tram in Qld., technically the rail would be flat-bottom, probably no heavier than 40lb/yd in the steam era, and spiked direct to the sleepers... yes, that is exactly what I had in mind ...Peco rail sections ...

I guess, (looking at the webpage) there is somewhat flat bottom, although it is clearly described as "Code 200 Bullhead Rail" SM-32 CODE 200 For comparison "Code 250 Flat Bottom Rail" is: G-45 CODE 250 I will have to have a look at real thing to make my mind It's not a show stopp...
