Re: The Potters Orchid Railway

Senior management is on the record for claiming civil engineering is a winter time sport here in Brisbane. So the push is on to clean up the mess and have a reasonable environment to operate wine and smelly cheese night steam specials in the coming summer months. Due to C19 work practices only the ...

Re: Llewellyn Loco Works #1

Slow progress, mainly because I am a slow worker on the tools. Queensland Railway style coal boards just for kicks and giggles. A lot of thinking went into the lift out tender top function and hence design and the mob now make a start on the many parts to be fitted to the tender top plate etc. http...

Re: Llewellyn Loco Works #1

Snipped for clarity I thought the black rings around those bolts on the Slomo were rubber dampers of some sort. I think it's a good idea like you say to put a rubber pad under the machine where it sits on the tender frame. I Yes, the innards of the Slomo mech are indeed isolated with rubber rings i...

Re: Llewellyn Loco Works #1

I don't know if you're already planning to do this, but the heavier you make that vehicle, the better it will work. I have two steel plates inside my "flywheel" van, about 3/4" thick and approximately 8"x3". I tried to weigh it for you, but it maxes out my kitchen scale and...

... I cannot see why you would cross pin the crank pins to the cranks. I could not find where B. W mentions this in the book ??... There it is (scanned from the book): https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49868821548_75c7dd80c8_o.png I guess it's another poetic licence by the illustrator and book's ...

Video of MAM's Lady Ann test run post eccentric crank cross pinning. I was not going to sleep that night till I heard it steam and the beat was OK.

The workshop mob are about to enter the world of soft soldering structures for the first time. Lots of working out to be done. The Tender profile is being inspired by the Burma Railways # 9 loco. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49848768111_8292f728a0_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49...

Re: bambuko loco works 0-6-2 (Fowler)

For what it is worth, I made the driving crank pin from silver steel (or was it an off cut of a 1/8" HSS drill shank?) as it was pressed on and did not need any threads. The eccentric crank will be cross pinned using 1.00mm HSS drill shanks, this is yet to be done after test steaming. The rest...

The slots in the tender are for the Slomo chain.
Stay tuned.

Nice springs, lovely stuff.
Keep feeding the pics and updates.
I now wish I had taken the trouble to make spring.
Perhaps next time.

Thanks Garethh, of course you use Llewellyn lugs and castings for your frame making ;)

Re: The Potters Orchid Railway

There has been reports of a steam loco making clandestine evening runs on the POR metals. The reports also hint that the humans voices heard sounded a lot like the pair from senior management of the POR. The next morning an investigation was undertaken and an emptly bottle of Pinot Noir was found a...

On Brian Wilson's Eric (and few other designs I looked at) steam pipe is quoted as 1/8" dia, but nobody ever mentions the wall thickness... I can get 1/8" copper pipe in following SWG - 27, 26, 24, 22, 20 (or for metric guys from 0.4mm to 0.8mm wall thickness). Which size do you gu...

It will be interesting to see how will aluminium perform long term in this particular application. It should not be a problem, unless one thinks corrosion might be a pro...
