and fitted a much lighter friction spring
Do you need one at all? I discard mine and rely on the servo to hold the reverser in position.

I totally agree, servos with nylon gears are a failure waiting to happen. The blue servo I showed (with the bracket I'd made) was just a broken one of the right size I'd had kicking around. The metal geared servo I used originally had been moved on and installed in a Bertie.

I started off by having a servo for the regulator as well as the reverser but, as mine was one of the older Ragleths with the smaller side tanks (so no room for batteries in front of the gas tank) and also because I'm not a great fan of extra holes in the cab floor, I fashioned a bracket to hold a s...

There is insufficient space left below the cab floor to fit an Orange RX receiver plus a 4 x AAA battery holder. Looks like I have no option other than to fit the receiver or battery holder inside one of the side tanks to keep everything R/C on-board (been previously running it with the battery hol...

Why not buy them directly from Mamod? They're gauge adjustable.

Sorry, meant to type "plug" but it ended up as "plate", have corrected it. My 2009 kit Billy assembly instructions say: "BOILER BLANKING PLUG The boiler blanking plug is screwed into the turret at the top rear of the boiler. This makes use of a ‘O’ ring and needs only to be ...

Can you tell me where this filler is located ? The blanking plug on the top of the turret if you've got one. Sure you can fill it through the safety valve instead, but why bother? I'd just put down the safety valve cover and forget where I'd put it. I don't know, but suspect, that Roundhouse instru...

The later Billy (and Lady Anne - they use the same boiler) I'm going to correct myself. This is based on the early Lady Anne (1998) and later Billy (2009) that I've had. Both locos have boilers with the same physical dimensions but where the Lady Anne has to be filled through the safety valve (the ...

Billy uses the safety valve to fill the boiler, other engines have a separate filler plug which is normally replaced with the top-up valve
The later Billy have a separate safety valve and water filler.

It would be hard to fit a sight gauge as there aren't the necessary openings on a Billy's boiler backplate. It obviously could be done but wouldn't be easy. One alternative would be to purchase a Silver Lady boiler from Roundhouse as I believe the Lady Anne and Billy have the same boilers. Expensive...

If they're attempting a loco for the more serious end then it has to be two things... it needs to look right and not have company names in places where they are unsightly.
Three things: as above plus it has to work properly

If it was a new loco sounds like the boiler needed flushing out from manufacture. If it was second-hand then either it was copper oxide as has been suggested or sometimes you get steam oil sucked back into the boiler when the regulator wasn't closed and/or the drain opened after a run.

At the moment the garden rail loco market seems to be changing, which means you may be entering it at just the right time. The major manufacturers appear to be aiming more and more at the expensive end of the market. As has been said elsewhere, its been a while since either Regner, Accucraft or Roun...
