Re: Storage and conservation of steam cylinders after use
Lovely thread you have in the link, I have replied there.
I will surely look into your suggestion.
What do you thing about my idea of air running with lighter oil in the mechanical lubricator for now?

Storage and conservation of steam cylinders after use
I am facing a few challenges getting around this problem with my larger model. Will it be sufficient after steaming to just run it on air with both cylinder drain cocks open to blow out all the water in the cylinders and the mechanical lubricator will likewise still be pumping steam oil into the ste...

Re: 3.5” gauge coalfired loco identification help.
Like I've said in my comment on Youtube it is probably based on Don Young's Mountaineer. Series of articles started in Model Engineer Vol 139, No 3467, June 1973 Here is the GA from the first part: mountaneer.png Thanks , Nice that we can meet again here and communicate directly. I can see a lot of...

3.5” gauge coalfired loco identification help.
Hi guys, after a while of inconsistent interest in the live steam part of my hobbies, I got the bug again when I got the opportunity to buy this 30 yr old locomotive. It was last run about 25 years ago, this 3.5 “ gauge coal fired loco has been sitting covered in a garage until now when it was offer...

The boiler should certainly not slant as this will expose the top of the tubes at the smokebox end of the boiler at lower water levels. This may also make the smokebox seal to the boiler leak as the joint will not be square Interesting , but isn't the end of the tubes always exposed in vertical boi...

Looking at the photos on their website, plus your photos and video it looks to me that the boiler slopes down from the back of the smoke box fitting. Is that normal or by design, or is it just the way the boiler bands are? Is that the standard chimney fitted or a customised version? Chris Cairns. Y...

I think you might have a valve gear timing problem there. Plus the way the smoke puffs out of the firebox door when you open it might suggest a daughting problem, the blower should really be pulling that up the chinmney even with the fire door open. I Think you are right, the Valve timing needs to ...

Boiler is 53mm in diameter, it has 4 fire tubes , the top of the highest fire tube is 25mm from the boiler wall.GardenRail:82974 wrote:
Good luck with that. I would be interested to know how low in the boiler the top firetube is. I note there is no onboard water so it will need to be be pretty far down.

I am glad to hear that the Anthracite is not at fault as i initially feared, i guess it was probably due to my own error and lack of experience since i could not get it to light in my coal fired 1½ inch scale Marshal traction engine either which has a larger and presumably forgiving firebox. I conta...
