Re: Bowande/GRS Quarry hunslet
Hmm. Not sure my experience is the same as yours. Mine needs VERY little gas flow to maintain pressure. Maybe partly a result of my having a lighter load behind it? If anything I have a slightly hard time getting the safety valve not to lift, but I think that will come with practice. Mine is now run...

Re: Bowande/GRS Quarry hunslet
Hey Simon. Are you able to pump water through your Goodall valve with the valve removed from the boiler, as in the pic? I've cut the tubing on mine to a similar length to yours, but still can't get any water through it with a syringe. It just seems to me like the tubing fits too tightly around the v...

Re: Bowande/GRS Quarry hunslet
Any chance you can post a pic of how short you cut the tubing on the valve? I'll try the same!

Re: Bowande/GRS Quarry hunslet
Interesting. Definitely keep me posted how you get on. John had mentioned the same to me before I had steamed mine, that many of the valves had the tubing cut too long & just need trimming slightly. Clearly I don't fully understand how the valve works. I figured the tubing seals the hole in the ...

Clear silicone. Resists heat extremely well, & can be removed without damaging the underlying paintwork.

Re: Bowande/GRS Quarry hunslet
Glad you got it sorted Simon. Looks great! Yep, I've not figured out the top up valve yet. I haven't managed to phone John as I need to get on the phone early in the morning here in Canada to catch him before he goes home. I've no shortage of tubing of various sizes, but thought I'd try & get aw...

Re: Bowande/GRS Quarry hunslet
Cheers for the taster Ted Your model seems to run exceptionally well at slow speeds. Have you done a haulage test with it to see how much she pulls? Nope. In truth, I cut the video right before she stalled. I've only steamed it twice, so still figuring out the gas & regulator settings. I'm sure...

Re: Bowande/GRS Quarry hunslet
Good stuff!
Suspect your patience will hate me, but here's a taste of what you have to look forward to:

I need to call John in the morning as I can't figure out what I need to use the Goodall valve, though I think it's fairly standard.

Re: Using clay/putty to add to 3D prints?
Thanks all. I'd seen Green Stuff mentioned online. When I saw the cost at my local shop I was more convinced to stick with the advice of "stick with what you know!" Will see how rusty my Milliput skills have gotten in the last 20 years... That said, Rick's work is seriously impressive. If ...

Using clay/putty to add to 3D prints?
All, I have some 3D printed resin figures I'd like to modify by adding accessories, hats etc. I thought I could use a putty or modelling clay to do this. I've no idea what product would be good for this. I'm familiar with Millput from back in the day when the way to get 16mm scale passengers was to ...

Re: Merlin locos
Well, the weather held off beautifully today so ladies & gentlemen, meet Myrddin: IMG-20220402-WA0006.jpeg The timing is way out on one side, & the set screw holding the return crank to the axle is stripped, so I'm going to have fun with that. Getting it out will be one thing but I suspect f...

I owe this thread an update. Everything is installed: IMG_20220401_181633.jpg Deltang receiver on the left behind the power switch. Not yet fixed in as I still need to set servo trims. 4 AAA batteries soldered & taped together & placed on the right hand side in front of the lubricator. Servo...

Re: Bowande/GRS Quarry hunslet
Crazy. I also picked one of these up. In the same livery and also as a 40th birthday present...!
I've not given mine a run yet. I plan to do so Saturday, but having poked around the build quality seems excellent. The folks at GRS are very helpful. I'm sure they will sort you out.

Re: New jennie my frist steamer
Not quite the states, but here in Canada we've basically two options: 1: The pure butane cannisters. I often find these from smaller, often Asian owned markets. They use a non-threaded fitting which makes finding an adapter to fit our locos a bit tricky, but they're out there. The cannister can fit ...

Re: Merlin locos
On this generation of Merlin loco, the Mayflower & Major included, the gas tank is in the roof between the cab windows, & the receivers of the time stuck to one side of it. I could definitely fit a square pack in the space freed up by relocating the receiver, (Deltang receivers are much smal...

Re: Merlin locos
I've recently acquired a late model (outside frames & loosely simulated valve gear) Monarch. The electrics are in need of a bit* of a tidy up, so I plan to remove the old 25MHz receiver & install modern stuff. One thing I can't figure out is where the batteries are supposed to go? Unlike the...

Steam-up area/turntable ideas
All, I've taken on design of the turntable/steam-up area for our local model engineering group. Thought I would put a general call out for ideas/inspiration. Some photos of the layout as it stands currently, with a temporary bridge where the turntable is to go: https://i.postimg.cc/t1zqgzsM/IMG-2022...

From time to time I like to come back to this thread & read it in its entirety over several evenings. The CVLR was such a fantastic feat of civil engineering, with amazing atmosphere to boot.
