Two Dogs Railway v.2

Greeting folks. It's been a few months. First things first is that a second version of the Two Dogs Railway is being cobbled together which is the primary reason for this thread. Secondly, I've been doing good personally, having found employment with a customer of my previous employer. No silly mini...

Two Dogs Mining Company Declares Bankruptcy

Times are tough and the latest news here is that the Two Dogs Mining Company has gone bankrupt before one foot of track was able to be laid. --- The real story is that with the recent enactment of masks mandates here in OKC on July 20 for the fake virus, my employer had instituted the requirement th...

Re: What is best

Rod, it's fun so long as it's just for me. Doing it as a side business would make it a job. I am allergic to work. :)

Re: What is best

Rod... yes, I build all of my trackwork. Ties are ripped on my table saw using treated lumber that is soaked in a mix of old used motor oil & diesel for preservation. Spikes are #18x5/8" brad nails. Rail is code 250 aluminum. It takes me about 2 hours to build a switch from start to finish....

Re: What is best

Rod,

Here's a photo of it in place on my first layout. The switch to the left was a curved right hand turnout.

Re: Question on using epoxy to scratch build a switch...

If you are using wood ties as I do, no need to use epoxy. On my turnouts the spikes hold everything in place. I use Code 250 aluminum rail. Although my turnouts are of the stub variety, the frog is the same as a points style turnout.

Re: What is best

I used a wye on a previous layout as it came straight on towards a hill located in the middle of the loop. Because of the topography a normal left or right wouldn't fit in the available space which was fairly tight. Constructing it was something different as were the several curved turnouts I built.

Re: The Two Dogs Mining Company

Greg... these are the primary component of a stub switch. The rails that lead into the switch that move side to side will be installed when the switch is positioned in place. It'll be a bit before I actually begin laying track because of the weather.

Re: The Two Dogs Mining Company

Rod, here are two photos of my railbender. It was built by a late friend of mine who was a machinist. He machined the rollers to work with the code 250 rail I use. Each roller rides on bearings for smooth rotation. It is a great machine. --- IMG_10072020_055832_(800_x_600_pixel).jpg IMG_10072020_055...

Thanks Andrew. I've knocked out three over the past three evenings. The goal is to do one each evening.

Re: The Two Dogs Mining Company

Alrighty then... spent some time fussing with the first of three right-hand switches. Temporary test fitting in the photo.

Previous switches were of blade design. In keeping with the mining theme of the new layout these will be of 'stub' design.

Re: The Two Dogs Mining Company

The girls do me good now that I'm a bachelor. Having said that, when they are both gone there won't be any more pups in my life. My future plans when I hopefully retire in six years are to spend summers traveling around Alaska and Canada (where most of my family still lives). I'd also like to travel...

Re: The Two Dogs Mining Company

@Rik... thanks. I'll be needing four left hand and three right hand switches. Should be getting a start tomorrow on these new switches. @Peter... the older, grey pup is Maggie. She is alive and well. She's about twelve and mostly deaf now. Her eye sight is a bit diminished but she can still spot the...

Re: The Two Dogs Mining Company

Today being a holiday I picked up some lumber to rip on the table saw. Hot & humid as Hades here... but fifteen minutes later it was completed though I was bathed in sweat and sawdust. These will be used to construct the new switches as most of the old units ended up having their ties lost when ...

Rik... I like that you added the narration. Unfortunately your voice was drowned out by the lokies as Peter mentioned above.

All in all, I prefer voice narration over having to read captions. 👍
