Re: The Gables Garden Railway (7 1/4")

Another short video - this time with some festive lighting :) https://youtu.be/RDGGAtx1Ba0 Running clockwise is more tricky, the gradient is steeper (something around 1:40, but probably a bit more in places). Combined with leaves and some drizzle, hand sanding was needed to avoid slipping to a halt...

Re: The Gables Garden Railway (7 1/4")

No R/C - just me crouching just out of shot ready to grqb the controller handset as it approaches!

The blue o&k is so low geared (through a worm drive) that it can be left to trundle around the garden by itself. So far it has always come back to where it started....

Re: 5" gauge 0-6-0 Sweet Pea

Interesting that the nitrile ball got sucked in towards the boiler... I have tried to get into the habit of opening all steam valves slightly after blowing down - mostly to stop them from jamming as the cool - but it also stops a vacuum forming in the boiler. Good luck with the painting. I didn't ha...

Re: Jynn: a 7 1/4" gauge wren

Not too much that it "needs", but there is plenty that I have planned for it anyway. I have a thread over on one of the VW forums if anyone is interested: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=743848&sid=eccf02b07389ce90b8053aa069f46155 Back to steam locos: I really don't t...

Re: Jynn: a 7 1/4" gauge wren

Yep, same stuff.

Its only the smokebox & chimney that have the VHT / woodstove paint.

(FYI i have just fitted a second hand exhaust to the bus without realising someone had painted it with hammerite - serious smoke.....)

That ^^^ is the "universal" satin black - i have used tge white on other projects & it seems to play with the "comi-color" fine.

Re: Jynn: a 7 1/4" gauge wren

Yes, it's all in rustoleum. Can't remember satin being especially hard to find (I think my local old-fashioned hardware shop carries it on the shelf). No need to mess about with thinning & rollers for the chassis, I don't believe it needs the same level of finish as the platework - especially on...

Re: Jynn: a 7 1/4" gauge wren

Tom; The chassis is a satin black - I don't remember ever seeing a full sized loco with a shiny chassis (unless it was from oil!). And as for the road-going distractions, there is a new (old) face on the drive..... 8) https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50353390592_34b1d81a3a.jpg DSC_0194_1599253108...

Looks great :thumbleft:

You might be interested to know that the miniature railway supply co have a whole 5" gauge armoured train that has been looking for a new home for a while (i saw it when I went up to buy rail from them).

Re: Anyone running g scale gas fired steam locomotives on plastic track?

I had assumed the original poster meant the type of all-plastic track that often comes with cheap G scale trainsets (that is what the black track in the 2nd half of my video above is). Agree that running on plastic sleeper track (with brass, aluminium, stainless, or nickel alloy rails) is extremely ...

Re: 5" gauge 0-6-0 Sweet Pea

Looks nice - I think you were right to discount the titch style cab (it always looks odd to me). The wren cab is quite a straightforward design, and is more sturdy than it looks. There are a couple of variations in spectacle plate to consider. Most (like mine) have the quite minimal flat plate, but ...

Re: Anyone running g scale gas fired steam locomotives on plastic track?

I once built a temporary layout using a mixture of cheap black plastic track and aristo-craft brass when living in a rented house; https://youtu.be/sosHiFfpw_E I used it to run a small gas fired live steam loco (an accucraft ruby). Worked fine, but I am not sure whether the track would eventually be...

Re: The Gables Garden Railway (7 1/4")

My wife is very tolerant of my hobby. As well as the garden railway, she has also come along to visits of miniature railways on holiday (including a trip to cologne specially timed to align with a big indoor live steam event). She has been known to drive the battery locos occassionally when needed, ...

Re: Jynn: a 7 1/4" gauge wren

Glad you enjoyed the pictures and video.

I think the blower issue was just due to the length of pipe, it goes quite a long way round from the steam turret up to the smokebox (plus my initial testing was in cold december / january weather.
