Re: Wallingford Industrial Rail Ltd. 7 January 2024 - Rik Bennett's Freight Manager at WIRL

Interesting. Maybe in twenty years' time, you'll (not we'll unfortunately), be able to say to your computer device (whatever it may look like then) something like - "Write a computer program which will manage freight handling from and to five stations on a semi-randomised basis" and it wi...

Re: Wallingford Industrial Rail Ltd. 7 January 2024 - Rik Bennett's Freight Manager at WIRL

Im not clear how GPT Chat assists with coding. Does it write the code or check the code after you've written it? Rik It can be used to write the code ( Github Copilot for example ) but I have also recently heard that it might be able to 'translate' existing programs from one language or library to ...

Wallingford Industrial Rail Ltd. 15 January 2024 - More steaming at PHH

After a week in the workshop putting together the start of the Points control panel video, it was time for some steam trains in the garden on a cold morning/afternoon. https://youtu.be/nuNZO0AzYG4 Billy and Caleb raised steam quickly, even though it was chilly, once the gas was persuaded to flow and...

Re: Wallingford Industrial Rail Ltd. 7 January 2024 - Rik Bennett's Freight Manager at WIRL

Thanks Rik. I started taking a look and at first blush it had seemed like it might be some dialect of BASIC, or at least intelligible enough from that background. ... On another note I asked an electrical engineering student if he could mentor in learning Python and his reply "just use GPT Cha...

Ingenious. Full marks to Modelling Electronics for advising and supplying. Rik Hi Rik I was/am very impressed with the chap (sorry, I don’t have his name to hand) who looked at the concept diagram, spent 30mins or so on the phone making really useful constructive comments that improved the design. ...

That looks great waiting for the next installment. Thanks for the comment. It might take a little while for the next instalment - SWMBO has some 12 inch to the foot things that apparently need to be done before we go to Malaysia to see our grandkids etc. I may be able to get the Pit Head Halt box s...

Wallingford Industrial Rail Ltd. 8 - 13 January 2024 - WIRL in the Workshop -Creating a point control panel - Part 1

I decided it was going to be too cold for running trains in the garden last weekend, so I thought I would make a start on showing more details of what I have planned for the points control and mimic panel. I find it just too confusing to remember which switch on the LGB control boxes goes to which p...

Re: Wallingford Industrial Rail Ltd. 7 January 2024 - Rik Bennett's Freight Manager at WIRL

The link isn't working for me, but this seems to be it for anyone else who's curious: Progress Report 16 - Freight Operation Might be drifting a bit off topic here but I'm curious about the Psion version, Rik. I always wanted one of those but I settled on an HP Omnibook instead. Is your software sp...

Re: 3D printing health concerns

Thanks for this link. I noticed I was getting headaches and generally not feeling great when I was printing in my study without additional ventillation. I was planning to move the printer to my workshop when the weather improves (and I have emptied the space I made fir it last summer - where does th...

Re: Wallingford Industrial Railway Ltd - 4 January 2024 - Inside storage shed

Thanks chaps, I'll give it some more thought... Do either of you recall roughly how far from the bottom of the until the floor sits? And yes, I'd be propelling whole trains in there, already coupled. I need to think about pointwork - if I have to buy new that will significantly add to the cost, and...

Re: Wallingford Industrial Railway Ltd - 4 January 2024 - Inside storage shed

Thanks for the video! All this has got me thinking... Over the coming months, we need to repair/replace the deck which stands above Penlan station on my line. While we're at it, we'll probably remove the wood store - we live in a built up area, so barely light the stove these days due to the growin...

Wallingford Industrial Rail Ltd. 7 January 2024 - Rik Bennett's Freight Manager at WIRL

Hi All Having watched many of Rik's Peckforton videos and following his article in Garden Rail this month - I downloaded his Freight Manager software and had a go at the WIRL on a chilly afternoon. I found the software really easy to use and quite intuitive after a quick read of his blog h...

Re: Wallingford Industrial Railway Ltd - 4 January 2024 - Inside storage shed

Are the STL files for your buffers buried in the zip files for one or other of your Southwold vehicles? I could then print up a couple of sets to go with your Peckforton couplings and give it a go again. I've looked through a few of my possible zip files in the 3D files section, but don't seem to h...

Re: Wallingford Industrial Railway Ltd - 4 January 2024 - Inside storage shed

Nice and practical, love the coffee shelf. I'd like to put something similar under a workbench one day, so storage yards like yours are always worth reading. :study: Suitably tiny yet grunty shunter for such a tight space, too. I have a plan (secret) to have a storage under the bench in &...

Wallingford Industrial Railway Ltd. 6 January 2024. More info on storage shed

Hi All In response to a request for info on the storage shed, herewith a few more details. :salute: The actual sidings were determined by the points I had to hand at the time but, with hindsight, I think it would be better without the 3 way point at entrance and a more direct route to the first sidi...

Re: Wallingford Industrial Railway Ltd - 4 January 2024 - Inside storage shed

Hi Andrew I think the reverse curves are certainly an issue. Rik B gave a design for a larger centre buffer which I think I will try when I have made up and installed his couplings on a couple of bits of rolling stock. And then try to remember to go through the reverse curves at “dead slow”. Thanks...
