I used Acid 8 etch primer and car spray paint both from Halfords
The colour is VW Paras Blue as it's very close to LNER Garter Blue.

Good choice, it's a lovely little loco and a great kit to build, it took me 12 days to make and paint mine.
The bodywork is especially easy to assemble as most of it is pre-formed with only 4 joints to solder.

I really like this, a superb build.

For the radiator why not use length of M4 or M3 threaded rod side by side over the width of the opening.
This will look fairly much like radiator core / cooling fins.

I would go for the Katie for a first kit loco, it's a lot easier to fit 2 axles and rods plus the body work is nearly all pre formed with only a few tabs to bend and 3 joints to solder.

Just going through the same thing myself with the same results, so I had a look at the PCB inside and it isn't a socket for a charger it appears to be for a power supply with the charging circuit built in. I've not got around to putting volts across it and measuring the current delivered to the batt...

I'd say your 90% there, just hold back the hammer for the last 10%, it's looking good.

I'd take off the pressure gauge, drain any water out of it, blow any
water out of the siphon and try again.

The insulation is just a plastic bush, so it's easy enough to regauge 45mm wheelsets to 32mm if necessary. This will be all right for a piece of rolling stock but not for a locomotive as the plastic bush will have to be fixed in such a way that it will take the drive from the motor without slipping...

The chassis is OK but with a few limitations, there aren't any bearings in it, the axle just runs through a hole in the steel and on mine the holes aren't lined up that well. The wheels are NOT insulated and I don't really think it'll be possible to modify them to make them insulated. I've built a s...

I wouldn't use softwood, but having said that you might just (and I MEAN JUST) get away with using good quality and properly
seasoned red deal, But as I keep saying use kiln dried sapele, it's not expensive, it will take up the creosote well, it's nice to machine and it's stable.

Would this be any good? http://www.stilesandbates.co.uk/product.php/section/7280/sn/AWALSB_MST/site/PN131120 You would need to cut it to size for sleepers with a bandsaw of course. That's far too good a wood to use --- go for kiln dried sapele and buy yourself a GOOD quality floor mounted table saw...

I'd use kiln dried sapele but if you can't cut it to size yourself then any option is going to be expensive.
