Re: Yr Hen Felin & Yr Orsaf Newydd

After a full day of faultlessly working the shunting puzzle Yr Hen Felin at the West Wales Model Railway show yesterday Porthmadog enjoys the sunshine with a mixed freight. She had enough battery life remaining to do some circuits of the outdoor layout. The fish van awaits iron work and lettering, t...

Progress on the Plateway Models Fish Van:- IMG_4217.jpeg I'm not entirely satisfied with the paint finish. It had several coats of grey primer followed by lots of coats of matt white. It has not filled all of the corners nor as much of the grain of the plywood as I would like. Maybe I should have do...

The nearly completed guards van at the end of the new siding. It needs door knobs, and looking at the photo I will probably glue the roof down.

Thanks Andrew,

they are a little bit longer now and have hi-tech buffer stops as in between showers this afternoon I just tidied up the ends that don't show in the previous picture,

Re: Yr Hen Felin & Yr Orsaf Newydd

I finally bit the bullet and ordered another Cliff Barker point so I could connect up the two yard siding that was not connected to the rest of the system (it was the spare track I had left from the forty yards I bought). The point came yesterday afternoon so I went out in the garden and this:- IMG_...

It was visiting the Preseli Mountain Railway that inspired me to build my own permanent outdoor layout.

Re: Yr Hen Felin & Yr Orsaf Newydd

Thanks Philip,

I can see the value of a handrail on the end post but had not considered adding one there. Drilling into thin MDF edgewise is worrying. I guess with the existing holes in the kit one can do as one wishes so a horizontal rail across the cab would be an option.

Re: Yr Hen Felin & Yr Orsaf Newydd

That’s not what I was referring to Philip,

if you look closely at the photo you can make out where I have filled holes, level with half way up the hand rails I have fitted, on the four vertical frame members,

I normally use crocodile clips to hold the axle boxes firmly to the frames when gluing but the wheels on this one turned more freely when the axle boxes were loose than when held in place with clips so I tried putting glue on the mating surfaces and just placing the wheels in their axl...

Re: The Railway in the Valley of the Mill

Phil, we are very civilised in our remote corner of West Wales, it's one of the joys that there are not many more people here. :D Had we been 230 Trevor would have to have rented a field and a bus for the Park and Ride and then we would have had difficulty negotiating running rights! I had to look t...

Re: Yr Hen Felin & Yr Orsaf Newydd

Hi Rod, Thanks for your suggestion. I think it would need a very special grade of plywood to survive outside in the climate of West Wales. I know that there is a totally waterproof form of MDF but it is very expensive. At the moment what I am doing seems to be OK. It has been hot and sunny today and...
