I know a chap who made a MICROBE out of a Mamod. Sadly he died a few years ago so I cannot ask him about it.

I have 20+ years experience with steel track. I have found that you no problem with adhesion. The wheels polish the rails so rust is only a problem after the winter brake and that last for the first lap or two.

You could buy a cheap motor/gearbox and just push some wheels on for 45 gauge,32 gauge is not so easy and whatever gauge only 2wd.

You can fix your axle problem.Get a stripe metal and bend it in a U shape that fits over the axle and bend over ends when over axle.
