Having bought the original loco I was somewhat surprised by the toy-like mechanism, which didn't work properly either. After removing the smokebox exhaust on mine I slipped some rolled mesh down the chimney to catch the water etc, which despite an offset exhaust stub still ended up all over the loco. The oil will also burn off giving smoke..... My Garratt is currently stopped with slipped tyres on the driving wheels...

I use a Pentax K10D though its been superseded several times since I bought it.

Canon compacts are also good.
