Cleaning valve gear

Hi

I've just bought a second-hand RH Billy and the valve gear has got very stained with oil etc over the years. Do I have to dismantle the valve gear and clean abrasively or is there something I can brush on which will bring back the shine.

I like that - what are the concrete blocks you've used to make the formation with, please? They are Aerated blocks which I cut to 50mm deep x 100mm wide using either a hand or electric circular saw laid on 2" foundation of concrete. I got a very good price from Wickes by buying all their damag...

Laverstock Hill Light Railway

I have been working on this project since the end of last winter. Inspiration came from a visit to The Milford Hill Light Railway, thanks Alan.

What paint?

I have seen some stunning finishes in pictures of your models.
What types of paint are people using for metal, wood resin etc?
Do you spray or brush?

Sorry, yes I did mean Chris Bird, although you can take a lot of credit for inspiring me with your posts as I journey into this new world for me of garden railways.

And sorry to Chris Bird if he is reading this and thanks for a very informative website.

Jedrig

At the Peterborough show I gave in to temptation and bought a Jedrig (made for John Sutton by Accuraft) as the Edrig was no longer available. This was my first steam loco of this size, before I had played around with a Mamod SL1 but wanted something bigger. To say I was disappointed would be an unde...

Track extension

I am using Peco SM32 at the present on a raised flat terrace but am looking at trying to expand up the edges of the lawn.

Are there other types of rail which have better traction?

Steve I have tried to understand the difference between the two types of battery but I am still a bit confused. I notice that the power tool industry has largely changed over to the Li-ion batteries now. So needing a power source for some small 3volt motor loco's for the grandchildren to use on my r...

Steve

Your first link was for Li-ion batteries which are different to Lipos, I don't think they need a balance lead.

Concrete casting

I would like to cast a station platform and a tunnel mouth. How do I get the stone blocks effect in the mold?
And any other tips would be appreciated.

Rail Spacing

I am thinking about building a 16mm scale garden railway using Pico SM32 rail.

What is the minimum distance between tracks?

And what is the minimum radius for bends and will Pico SM32 bend that far?

Is the Pico Y point for re-joining the main track?

Thanks

Possible track layout

We have a small garden which slopes quite steeply across the back of the house. Having said that one area is terraced and measures 2x5.5 mts and its the only flat lawn we have. I am reluctant to install a permanent track as its used by the grandchildren. It would be really nice to have somewhere to ...

Replacing wheels on Mamod SL1

Is there a recognised method of replacing/fitting new wheels on a Mamod SL1.

Do the wheels pull off the axles?

Mamod SL1 screws

Hi - Can anybody tell me what size and type of self tapping screw that can be used to refit the side tank to the smoke box after the rivets have been removed. Local DIY stores and Screwfix don't seem to have anything so where can I buy a small quantity?
