SSP Slo Mo
Has anyone installed a Slo Mo in their engine? Was it difficult?
And did you like the performance change?
Thanks for any comments!

Still waiting on the Lady Anne version though.

Why not make a cheap and cheerful version yourself to see whether it works well enough to shell out on the real thing?
I found my lash up enabled my Telford to get around the bits of my garden track where it had previously either stalled or raced away.

Thanks for the information, tom_tom_go. But with a 3 axle Lady Anne engine, is there any room left to mount the Slo Mo in between the frames?
I'm interested in the Slo Mo for my small indoors 32mm switching/terminal layout. For slow speed running of rod type engines.
Currently using a Regner Chaloner, and being gear driven it runs well slowly shunting cars back and forth.
But now I need a Passenger and Road engine, to bring the trains onto the layout from the outside world.
I want a RH Katie to do the honors, but it has to run slowly.
Will the Slo Mo work to make a slow speed shunting engine?

Terry (SSP) has a prototype for the Lady Anne chassis so it will fit.
As for shunting speed, is this slow enough for you?

The device will work to produce the kind of running characteristics you are looking for. I built the "cheap and cheerful" flywheel wagon that Mike Wakefield has demonstrated, and I can attest that flywheels, whether mounted to the engine itself or in a separate van, really do make the train behave as though it has full-size momentum.
I have managed to get my manual Roundhouse locomotive, on level track, to sustain about two exhaust beats per second, or 30 RPM if you will, pushing the "momentum wagon". This seems like somewhat less than "walking speed" in 16mm scale. I am sure the "slomo", with its higher quality parts, will perform very well indeed.
I expect that with R/C and a "slomo" device, a Roundhouse engine will turn out to be a very good shunting engine, as long as you don't let it sit long enough for the cylinders to cool between movements. Even then, you can install DJB drain cocks, and then your engine will perform just like a real one.
