I know this is predomonantely a 16mm forum, with most members using the scale, even me. I know there are other scales out there for this and some members here use them, but as said before the most popular scale is 16mm. But now, I've bought something for a build that is a bit...bigger. I volunteer at a local 7 1/4 inch railway at the Old Station tintern run by the Old Station Tintern Friends group (see signature), and now I'm building something to run on it. I'm toying with the idea of a tram or railcar, any suggestions are apprieciated!

The motor wheelset, there is another set like this without the motor.

Delightful.................... but if there are engines (and presumably controls) at both ends, why turn the thing on a turntable??

I'm not entirely convinced there are cabs and controls at either end. Difficult to tell!
Still, when you have a turntable, why not use it?

I'd go for something ride on, like proper narrow gauge;) What make is the wheelsets?

Ride on is the plan, I also prefer proper controls to the hand held controllers. Here is a couple of snaps of 3D models I have made of what the finished product could look like...

A green and cream representation.

A red and cream version, with a driving van trailer (basically an unpowered copy with one driving end) and also a GUV van. The driving van trailer is the closest.

I like the idea of the two car railcar, but I'm not sure it would work as a ride on.

The models were made by myself in Google Sketchup, and credit to Sketchup themselves for the people (too complicated meshes for me!

).

Picture should be sorted now, thanks to photobucket, I can't seem to get my images to upload here recently without using an outside image hoster.

I too have been temped to build a ride on tram style vehicle for the railway I work at! Although I was think more of a covered track inspection car rather than a passenger carrying vehicle. I look forward to following your progress, and love the renders from google sketch up!

Paul Middleton at Ride On Railways has been getting interested in trams of late. It may be worth giving him a buzz. His latest newsletter shows some tram style controls he has been developing for 7.25 which look very good to me...

@sstc, those handles look great, will have to wait for prices though, and I bet that won't be cheap...

@Al, It is 12v and can run off of one battery although I think you can use two. It will (according to the company) pull four people easily, so should be good for two two seater trams (one driving motor car and one driving trailer car).

The best place for batteries is Eurocarparts. Their own make are good, cheap and last well. I've had several sets now for 5" gauge engines. They also come with a 3 year guarantee and it doesn't matter what tou use them for. http://www.eurocarparts.com/
