I thought i would have a go at building Dave Watkins's Wild Rose from scraps of material i have.

Hi Andy, Im scratch building my loco,A kerr stuart brazil, As im just getting into 16mm gauge,Can you tell me who Dave Watkins's is and what is Wild Rose, I assume he suppys drgs

I had better chip in here. I built the original Wild Rose based on the small quarry Hunslet locomotives used in the North Wales slate quarries. Keith Bucklitch described how to build one, Wild Rose Too, in SMT back in 1987 or thereabouts. He actually built two locos, an open cab and a closed cab version.

I am currently working on revised drawings but have not as yet built a loco form these new drawings. So far I have redrawn most of the working parts including a meths burner. I am currently at the stage of designing gas tank and burner for a gas fired version. The bodywork is to follow. See:-

Dave, i dont suppose there are any imperial drawings for the tank.
i think the article from which i am working just says to doing it from an end view of a hunslet.

It would be interesting to do a proper loco boiler like TME do, but i think thats out of my leque!

Sorry I don't have a drawing in Imperial.

This might be helpful. It is the sketch I did for the tank and burner I used in a model of Bagnall Sealion. The tank sits on the footplate. I resited the gas take off and control valve to the top of the tank rather than on the side as shewn. Not shewn are the slits in the burner tube - around ten slits needed - should be in the first half of the burner tube staring from the gas jet end.

Thanks for the info Dave,Im building Keiths Loco,as i wanted a garden railway and did not have a grand for a loco,But engineering is easy for me cuz ive been doing it for a living for 30 odd years

So if all goes well ill be doing the Wild Rose next, And Andy Really mate do not be frightened to build a boiler, if you can do engineering like the stuff you have shown you can build a boiler you do need a good size torch to get the heat, you get enough heat for the solder to melt , and the copper is good and clean, you can not go far wrong, ive built several in 5 inch gauge and 16mm ones are a doddle, if you need help just ask ill be only to pleased to guild you throu it

i have never done that kind of soldering job before. but would like to elarn, as contracting someone els to build one is expensive.

The pot boiler or internal gas boiler doesnt put me off to much.
I was refering to designing a proper loco boiler, with a wet firebox,
designing and making that style boiler, that small wouldnt be the ideal start project.

I started one a couple of years back as a first build. I got stuck with the cylinders and put it away.

I have been concentrating on my coal fired edrig, which i was stuck on and put away for a few years.

bigger locos took priority eventually.

Dave Watkins has updated his original Wild Rose design fairly recently, named Wild Rose III. Wild Rose Too is Keith Bucklitch's version of Wild Rose, written up in SMT magazine years ago.

Dave generously shares his work on the net and the drawings and a construction Blog for Wild Rose III are available online here
