As a sideshow to my work on my SL (see post 'Changing of a Lady' in 'Projects') I was building a coach kit, however, it dwarfed all my rolling stock so I am now converting to a wagon for goods:








I a pair of flexible brake hoses and lamp brackets to add as well including more rivets/bolts.

Kids can be great sometimes. The wagon has been dropped already due to 'accidents' and it has given it some knocks/dents that make it look used

Not worked on rolling stock for a while as I am building the line for them to run on, however, got some painting done today:





The wood on the flat wagon needs weathering more and some matt varnish also need applying.

Lookin good.

I recently built myself a purpose built painting/hobby table in the loft so I can get on more with rolling stock construction.

By the time I set up the dining table for a days work I end up having to pack my stuff away again before the family invade so this new table will enable me to just leave stuff and walk away from it as and when required.

The flat wagon is nearly finished:




I think the wood needs more weathering and maybe some lamp brackets for the side panels?

I think it's finally done as I have spent too long tarting around with it!

It did look better prior to the pictures being taken, however, I went OTT with the matt varnish so white residue appeared and I only learned later you can just use gloss varnish to dissolve these white patches and then go over with matt varnish again.

If you look at the vacuum pipes I have extended the ends using twin & earth cable so it shows the pipe going along the bottom of the wagon (no braking on this, just piped through).

Also, this pic did not make the last post due to typo:



I think next time I do a big order with Brandbright I will order some shackles/pins so loads can be secured onto the wagon with chains.

Time to build something to put on it now

With bitter cups of coffee until you get down to the over-sweet bit at the bottom
(Or, with soggy biro's in our pockets! )

Did you build it completely out of stirrers (as I did my first one), or use stirrers to cover a wood block (as I did after a flash of inspiration )?

It's built round an used 12v rechargeable battery when the contacts filed down (don't file contacts so both + and - make contact with the metal file otherwise you get sparks like I did he he)

Nice and heavy as I like a good chuff!

The external planking is balsa wood which I find very easy to work with.

Yes I have. Its goood. as are their working hinges and whatnot

I have some of these kits now (brake gear), however, was wondering is it the norm to have one on each side as it would save on cost if I just fitted one only to each wagon I build

Depends on your chosen prototype - eg the W&L was one side only
