A Forum Project locomotive

Post by Dr. Bond of the DVLR » Thu Aug 12, 2010 10:07 pm

All came from an Idea of Dan's of an relatively simple to build first locomotive to have a go at. It uses really simple boiler, cylinder arrangement and burner making it an excellent locomotive to have a go at. I have so far only got the frames on mine made as I am waiting for a set of wheels to arrive! Mine is 45mm gauge and to a slightly different designs to Dan's but still mechanically identical showing the versatility of the design. Dan's is 32mm gauge. I want to make mine as simple and easy to construct so am buying the difficult to make bits, Dan has made all of his. Now over to Dan...

Thanks Zach. My loco is based on the scotish gas works locos made by Kerr Stuart and Barclay to name a couple, pictures can be found on the Talyllyn museum website and in the Narrow gauge album (page 101). As Zach has said I wanted a simple loco to build that still looked realistic but without the need for internaly firing. So a design was devised after seeing videos of the older Bowman locos, being built around two single acting oscilating cylinders. To keep it simple reverse valves were omited but to give some control a simple but effective regulator has been fitted. The wheels are from an old mamod loco even thought they are over size for it to be a scale loco. The aim was never to build a scale modle but more to capture the character of the original. Apart from the wheels I have constructed all the parts myself. The drawings for the loco will be made avaliable in the future.

Tech specs:

Length 180mm, width 60mm, height 85mm
Boiler capacity is 45ml
Cylinder bore is 8mm, stroke is 18mm
Run time is around 25 minutes
Haulage is limited to 5 slate wagons

Below is the full set of photos taken during constuction and a video to prove it works.

seriously nice work there dan. looks spot on. I must say Iv never seen an externally fired loco without tanks! im guessing the boiler is going to need to be heat resistant black paint? also what is the saftey valve? homemade?

Thanks Matt :D I would say the boiler needs to be heat resistant but I am going to experiment with ordinary car paint. The safety valve is homemade but a mamod safety valve can be fitted.

That looks very nice, although if I ever build one I reserve the right to turn it into a 1/12th scale 0-4-2 tank loco, and then decide to take off the added side tanks and turn it into a tender loco
"What the hell is that?"
"It's a model icebreaker sir."
"It's a bit big isn't it?"
"It's a full scale model sir....."

I have some single pack paint which the talyllyn use on their fire boxes only in corris and TR colours though, that might be ok on the boiler, the soot from the meths will blacken it though.
Was asking about the safety valve as I want a small one for the DeWinton

So do I, but talking to Mr. Bond the idea is that is the project goes ahead you wont need 'specialist' equipment :D
Thanks

I get the impression the idea is for an engine using readily available bits that won't need the use of a lathe or mill.

am I right?
