Simplex Caravan

Dave is sending me some drawings for a simplex caravan & I'm keen to get going. I chose the material (harmless Plastikard), a DPDT on-off-on toggle switch (off the internet as all of the electronics shops here never heard of a toggle switch) & I chose to buy finer wire so I can hide it in all the nooks & crannies. I'm going to use the chassis he used, an Ip budget chassis that will be purchased as soon as most of the body work is complete. I'm going to see if it's possible to build the whole loco for £33.57, half the price of the Ip kit. When the loco is finished, I'll run it on Ray's railway. I can't wait until the drawings arrive. The build will be put as part of my 'Scratch Builder' series so you can see how I do it

Sounds like a nice little project, I've seen some pics of the actual engine on the 'net over the last couple of days, I just can't remember where!

The Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge Railway's website maybe. I seen a couple of pictures of the loco in JCB yellow. I love industrial engines like simplexes, Listers, Rustons etc as I believe that they have a certain charm about them (maybe that's why I bought a Kerr Stuart). I should actually mention that the Kerr Stuart is out of service as it is going to be made reversible but that can be posted another day

Awesome, remember, take your time with it, use a very sharp knife (I found the best for plastikard are those cheap snap-off blade types so you can keep it sharp), and use a set-square to keep it all straight and level
And I can't wait for the new 'Scratch-Builder', that video was legendary!

Score (several times if needed) and snap is how I cut plasticard, using the cheapo (5 for £1) snap off knives.

Yep and a steel ruler, check the measurement 10 times if yo have to, I often do because I keep on forgetting it!

I got 10 for £1 in a pound shop near me! Ha beat you on the jammy git scale!
They lasted about 5 seconds and then disintegrated though!

I'll get my dad to buy a pack of knives from poundmania & I can get a steel rule with a cork base from WHSmith quite easily

Here's is the card Mock up. It looks exactly like what a simplex should but I'm not too sure about the height

Looks good try taking 5mm at a time off the cab base until it looks ok

Cheers Pete. I'll do what Dave said, chop off 5mm at the base. Thanks for the picture, now I could get those fine details but I don't know where to get a radiator grille. What did you do Pete on that simplex you made for the STT?

Same as 'hussra' suggested, 2 of them back to back, with a cap stuck on top made from disks of plastikard or whatever.

Hi
Before you build your base plate get your chassis as this will help you with the final sizes .
The wheels stand higher than the chassis so you will need to pack it out you will see what i mean if you look at the first pictures of pauly simplex that i posted
