Despite only a "skeleton staff" available and none too promising weather, the W&LLR Co. ran its Halloween Spooktacular today.

Crantoc seen at rest in Matthews Siding after bringing down the passenger stock.

Passengers had been promised a "Chilling Ride", which they certainly got today, with the majority of the train being made up of open stock!

The carriages look right at home! A chilling ride certainly by the looks of things, excellent.

I could say that it was down to the skeleton staffing, but it was me! - I rushed everything to get the run in and failed to marshal a brake van onto the rear of the rake and I haven't got round to fitting lamp irons to those coaches yet:roll:

Cos I've just fitted a sound unit to Crantoc  :D  (She sounds ace -  must get the Lister Twin unit for Toad next!!!)


As for the moss growth, I'll let you in on my little secret experiment.
At the bottom of the garden is a tiny tub, next to the little compost heap, and in the shed is a small shovel.
Up the road a couple of girls keep there horses stabled and regularly ride out down the road and past our house.
I sometimes find horse droppings near the front of the house which I gather up with the small shovel.
Most of it is destined for the little compost heap, but some of it goes in the tiny tub, along with some water.
This produces a most excellent liquid manure which I spread along the trackwork

Oh, and the shed roads were covered in soot while the rowlands mix was still wet. Once dry, the loose soot was brushed off.

Here's a quick demo of the ACME sound unit fitted to Crantoc as she takes the morning goods through Westwood.

It's the "Gardner Multi-Cylinder" unit.

The unit is an absolute doddle to fit, the only mod I've done to save space, is replace the rather bulky battery holder with a simple snap connector and I reckon adds an extra dimension to the old battery electric loco.
My only problem now is how the hell to cram the gubbins into Toad when the "Lister Twin" unit arrives
In truth, I reckon it'll have to go in a wagon

I'm glad that you like my sound units, Kevin. They are real recordings of real engines, not electronic white noise generators.

As to a steam sound I have these available.

They are identical in appearance to the multi cylinder and Lister twin units.

The reason I supply a combined battery holder/connector is to hold the supplied PP3 in place. If anybody would like a PP3 clip supplied instead of the holder, please ask.

Hiya Mike, nice to see you on here - that's a surprise

I must quickly say that the supplied 9v battery holder is far superior in every aspect than a clip. (Providing a good connection and a method of securing the battery.)
The only reason I couldn't use it is lack of space under the Jessie bonnet which already housed a 6xAA battery pack and PWM speed controller - if I could have used the holder, I certainly would (and will be using it on another project rather than a clip - I aint gonna waste it!)

I've heard the ACME steam sound and IMHO it's loads better than the Maplin unit, but since I'm retiring my steam outline battery loco's, I've gone for a cheap'n'cheerful option.
It's just that having fitted sound to one loco, the rest sound (or more accurately don't sound) daft without it

If the weather's kind tomorrow I'll run a test train for a proper demo, but here's the completed unit on the bench......

Yep, cheers Mike It shows that "ya gets wot yer pays for"

Anyhow, the postie arrived after filming the steam demo with the "Lister Twin" sound card that I only ordered yesterday afternoon! (Hows that for service?!)

The weather was still looking decidedly dodgy so I decided to crack on.........

First of all I ripped out all the old cab fittings from TOAD


Then I made up a clear plastic "sabot". The idea is to provide the cab glazing, insulation for the sound card components (circuit board and speaker, mounting for the components, and allow the whole lot to slide out for battery replacement or volume adjustment


Once that was done and after a quick test fitting,


It was time to put the kettle on and give the cab a quick lick of paint.


Then, while the paint dried and I drank my coffee, I assembled the sound unit on the sabot.


No need for any more painting, the cab colour shows through the clear plastic when the whole lot's slid into place - neat eh?

Starting to look like rain at any time now, so it was straight outside to film..........

RESULT! Light engine movements and she can still tow the skips around, but now in full voice!

Really can't recommend the ACME products and service enough!
