Todays jobs on the Kerr Stuart included re-assembling and testing the rolling chassis. The body fixing holes have been drilled through the footplate and the motion (and brakes) just needs a bit of weathering to tone it down.

Also the cab and backhead have been "blinged" (GRS castings supplemented with Cambrian and Playmobil plastic parts) - nowhere near prototypical, but the loco is freelance after all

The photo was taken just after completion and the assembled parts are currently drying in the paintshop after an overall coat of black paint. I'll hopefully be starting the detailing paintwork this evening

Cab looks good. If you want to make it look like a live steam engine in the cab, paint it all matte black and then pour steam oil over it along with some bits of fluff and a couple of cat hairs...

First pass to "lift" the cab interior - still some old glue marks where I had to remove bits of the previous owners work, I may disguise 'em (I have a cunning plan), or leave 'em once I've mocked up the cab back sheet & roof to have a look

What I meant was, the cab will look quite realistic when it's done, except I've noticed you can always tell a steam-outline electric powered model from a live steam one, because the electric ones are so clean. As you know the live steam ones get all oily and collect all kinds of things like bits of fluff, etc, when they are running outside. I was just making a joke about this phenomenon, saying that if you poured some steam oil and bits of fluff and dirt onto your model when it's finished, it will be indistinguishable from a real steam engine.

Jeez, I can't believe I'm trying to explain a little joke. I'm retiring from comedy after this week. Please come back and try the fish.

Sorry Keith, I thought you meant a full size loco, so I just didn't get the reference - it's just me being a bit thick

For a wee battery loco, that's a LOT of detailing! I can't wait to see the engine

Also, where did you get the backhead etc from - and how wide is it please?

I got the backhead with the rest of the kit, sold as an "Unfinished Project" on eBay - I dismantled it all and cleaned up the parts before starting it as a new build.

GRS sell 'em, both as individual parts or a complete set. The width at the base is about 2".

Today the main parts have been mocked up ready for a pre-paint photo

Methinks I'll reduce the depth of the buffer beams slightly, then it's fit centre buffers, brake pipes / safety chains (haven't decided which yet) and cab steps

EDIT: I thought I could live with the dome & tank-filler as fitted by the previous owner, rather than risk any excessive damage removing them (the tank-filler iis fixed via a lug in a hole in the tank top)
However, the longer I've worked on this, the more I've grown to dislike the dome and the off-set filler - time for more surgery

Very true

, I was refering more to the overall black quite suiting the loco (especially if I add the W&L red lining

) - however, if I've got enough rattlecan maroon left in the shed, that'll probably sway it
