So did you ever get a roasting from a signalman who's floor you happened to muddy up? Or did you get the newspaper laid down to walk on treatment?

Both! and had to take my boots off - and more than once had to stand in the doorway having a conversation cos I wasn't allowed in!
From day one I was told they were a strange breed

The boots aren't actually W&L property, Jane bought 'em along with some other "props" to set up some photo's of a mouse that was living under the shed!

Before setting off to Elsecar on sunday morning, I'd just put freshly charged batteries in the camera and was sat outside having a coffee and thought "Mmh, that moss is doing well on the Rowlands Mix"



I then thought it would be an ideal time to photograph a new member of the community, Morris, a miner who works at the quarry.
He's a modified IMP (ex Sweet Sixteen, now Trenaron) figure who was swinging his pick. He's now in relaxed pose carrying his flask.



Yes, the processing plant is at a jonty angle, but it's all coming in for a paint job. Soon. Well pretty soon anyway

Lots to do today, but after a quick whiz round the line "weeding", I couldn't resist the photo opportunity of an early autumnal morning!

and out onto the main for the first time.


The loco only needed a wire re-soldering and a bit of an oil round to return it to traffic.
Peter has used "friction fit" and "gravity glue" to hold the cab and bonnet in place - both freely available (good price!) and environmentally friendly!
The only thing I intend doing is adding a driver (the poor chap arrived with the Lady Anne but has an arm missing, the rotters at the TMD nicknamed him "Semaphore" for some reason - after some surgery, he now has a replacement limb but will never fire a steam loco again cos it's plastic so he's on diesel turns from now on )

Since Pendo decided to downsize the CVLR Mamod fleet, he kindly supplied a gas burner to the W&LLR. (Many thanks again mate )

This has been duly fitted in place of the meths burner in the lines "Heritage" loco, No.1 JANE.
Of course, access to the filler on the gas tank was always going to be a problem with the full Mamod cab, so.........................





I'd seen other cut down cabs and really didn't like the cab pillars left on, so I just followed the "join" of the spec plate down to side sheet level with a cutting disc.
Holding the cab rear in place - normally done with the spring clip in the roof, was a quick bodge drilling through the buffer beam and sheet and fitting a redundant nut & bolt from the roof! (hence the extra bolt head in the middle of the rear buffer beam):D

Still not sure whether I like the look of it, but it saves about £40 on replacements, which the Financial Dictator likes.......a lot!

Not had chance today with "chores" ( ), but, off to Butterley this evening for a steam up!
The weather is fabulous, I'm gonna be running the Mamod on gas for the first time, the Lady Anne on Meths for the first time and Matt is gonna be running DOUGLAS for the first time - oops, best get everything packed! (including the camera)

Hmmmmmmm i personally think that she looked better with the full cab, it seems out of proportion for some reason? but thats just me you've done a better job on all of it than i have of cutting the back cabsheet down on the mss!

It does look good but I'm not sure I'd do it to any of mine. The white handrails look a bit out of place with the brass one at the front.

I did it out of neccesity rather than choice I much preferred the full cab but once the gas replaced the meths burner, there was the problem of access to the gas filler and of course the gas regulator so the full cab just had to go
Thing is though, as a "small" loco, she looked a bit daft next to the other loco's on my line (except the Simplex!), but somehow now she's open cabbed she doesn't look so out of place
Keeping an eye on the water level is a lot easier now too BTW.

Good observation about the cab handrails - they're originals and had suffered the "monkey metal rot" form the loco being put away while still a bit warm The white paint is a cover up and only meant to be temporary. I should have replaced them with brass ones ages ago and FORGOT So, many thanks for pointing it out and I'll be changing 'em "dreckly".
