The other way I suppose is a put down a layer of mortar and push the shingle into it, but I suspect trying the yacht varnish will be a better bet. It is a tip mentioned in this months Garden Rail incidentally as a way of fixing ballast.
The Acer *should* be ok light wise, for once your shady garden will be something of a benefit. I've a feeling that they are fairly particular over soil pH, so it might be worth getting a test kit.

I am seeking a method of sticking ballast to baseboard and the yacht varnish idea sounds reasonable. Are there benefits of using it over waterproof PVA? How about cost comparison?

I have a cheapy Acer which I bought from Aldi about a year ago.
It's close up to the wall of the summer house and only gets sun for a a couple of hours in the early-ish morning. It is planted in a mixture of the solid clay that masquerades as soil around here, plus a liberal dollop of Poundstretcher compost when it went in, and it seems to have survived the winter fine. A full crop of leaves are half open as we speak.

I have given today's update a title. I will tell you what it is at the end!

I have burrowed underneath Woodbridge to lay the sewerage system...
bodged together from old bits of pipe and some t pieces
Image
Of course, I havn't gone mad, its not for waste. At the bottom will be a smoker (this system had to suffice)
Image
It connects together 4 of the chimneys so they produce smoke.

In other news I painted the warehouse
Image

And done a little work on the jetty
Image

I also did a mock up of the thoroughfare (the main shopping street)
Image

But, erm hang on. Let's look the other way...
Image
Hmmm, something odd is afoot...

Looking down on the little street:

Oh and the title?
Smoke and Mirrors...

Now that's what I call 'a cunning plan!'. How to make best use of limited space.... briliant!
The smoke idea is just wonderful too. Making locos look 'real' by having smoke from their chimneys is good but to make the houses look inhabited too is pure genius.
You have too much time on your hands. I'm retired but can't keep up!

Hah, that's my curse - I should really be putting many more hours into my Uni work (I am on holiday) but when you have a garden railway that you can tinker with...

So I've realigned the track at Woodbridge, there was a bit of a gap between the tracks here and a hump in the middle which I have eased. Taking out the gap has eased the considerable crowding in woodbridge slightly.
Image
Woodbridge station has had its roof cut down and had the burning treatment.
The Turntable has been properly aligned and cemented in
Image
(River Butley is running sans pony truck because I didn't realise when I got into the garden she was still set to 32mm and couldn't be bothered to walk upstairs to get my 45mm truck...)
The platform at Woodbridge has been raised up and the edges put in ready for surfacing - Mind the Gap!
Image
Ready to depart
Image
The sidings at Aldeburgh have been laid with some very old mangled bits of track. The short one will have a winch at the end for pulling loaded quarry trains in, alleviating the need for a run round loop.

Hmm, may that point be one from the PCR's surplus of WJR materials? ;)
What have you used for your jetty railings?

you should make a brass shim for the LGB point, since fitting them to my points I havent had any trouble shunting through them

I havn't had any trouble shunting through this point so far and yes this point was one of yours. The railings are from a dolls house shop suitably cut up

Let´s see more of the buildings and the little street. That has the makings of a nice little railway village

Your wish....
Image
Here is the photo I used in my talk - much painting and some figures put in. If I were to paint them a different colour on each side the illusion would be stronger...

A rather nice picture of the curve to behind the stump.
Image
It seldom gets photoed but I rather like this shot
River Cleddau with the empties going back to the quarry
Image
And now for something completely different. Here is the first of a long term plan to install a token system with Annett Key style locks for the points/ ground frames. These will probably be removeable (cirtainly the signals will be) as I am quite fond of the lonely look to the line (Signals tend to clutter up the place)
So, first of all as proof of concept
Image
Image
The points at Bawdsey are now only operable if the Bawdsey token is used...
Next thing is the Woodbridge ground frame. The home signal is set to clear and the point is set to the platform road when the frame is locked. Once the loco has arrived the frame is unlocked with the Woodbridge - Haddon Jnc token and the signal is set to danger. The only then (due to basic interlocking within the frame) can the point be moved across.
Image
Image
Its all still a bit rough and ready but I think it should work.
The rodding is garden wire through eyelets screwed into the sleepers with bits of brass offcuts as the cranks
Image
Its all going on...

Wow, Mr Bond, what an unusual and interesting diversion. It's very much in keeping with some historical narrow gauge practise, at the very least in the ingenuity of your work. I like it very much. This could be a great benefit to multiple operator lines where an operator is located at each station and trains run between them (carrying the Annett's key in a suitable location on the train.

The operating method is quite reminiscent of the relatively short lived Hornby Railways control system introduced in the 1930's. Good basic engineering such as this is likely to work! The use of door locks is a great idea too.

My burning question though is what make is that gorgeous little two lever ground frame?

all the best,

Andrew

I was wondering about that too. Could use about .... 8-10 of them.

By the way, I meant to say that I'm certain Inspecting Officer Isle would find this worthy of the most hearty commendation.

Its all being done in anticipation of the inspectors eventual return. The Lever frames are white metal kits made by Back 2 Bay 6. They need a little bodging to get them to "work" and my sister has already managed to break one of the levers by yanking it against the interlocking... Its been fixed with some epoxy resin and some brass strip but I am starting to question weather or not they are up to the job.
This signalling is very similar to the Mid Suffolk Light Railway system.

LOVE the locking token system...once again innovative Mr B

Re smoke etc....great idea

The late Peter Jones had various metal tubes amongst his buildings (especially work/factory) which would be filled with wet or oil soaked grass, or heat under a metal plate onto which dripped oil giving a continuous plume of smelly industrial smoke.....evocative!!
