erm im not sure what you mean by skates, i havent even looked at the stainz in a long long time! adding weight is probably the key and converting it to battery power. traction tyres? is that like a rubber tyre over the wheel? i dont think it has them.

as for age about 2004/5ish that sort of era so not too old. plastic connecting rods i think but theres a slim chance they may be metal and im thinking of something else.

and as for what Ivan told me, like i keep saying he didnt let on that much and i dont see why passing on the news is a bad thing - its good publicity for him and his company which is hard to come by. passing on information between friends is the best form of publicity as its free.

They've got pick- up shoes between the wheels, and it should also have one traction tyre- as you say, a rubber band around a wheel. Not actually as critical as it sounds like it should be, but they do make a difference to the adhesion.

I'd check the skates are free to slide up and down- give them a good dose of WD40.

they are to me, I want to see some imagination go into models not simply a copy of something else.

It's a shame for you then that we're currently living in an era of protoypes! Just look at the recent stuff from Roundhouse, Accucraft & I.P, most of it is prototypes at the moment.

Iv spoken with Ivan at IP and what he told me about his new loco is comletley different from whats been told here.

Regarding the Stainz- does it still have traction tyres (or a traction tyre), and does it have skates? The skates can stick, putting too much downwards force on the track and taking a larger share of the loco's weight (as opposed to just enough to keep them pressed on the track), reducing the weight over the wheels.

Check the skates are free, and try adding bit of weight. How old is it roughly- metal or plastic coupling rods/ valve gear?

just checked my hardly ever used Stainz (waiting for its RC!) and it does indeed have a solitary traction tyre.

I have to say having seen Andy's Feanor at GMES, and being surprised at how large it was for what it is, I am considering getting one. I still don't like the IP drive train but I shall put up with it as it looks like a good kit (and one I can build in less than 3 days!)
