I have built a RH Katie from a kit. I have made static steam engines from scratch. Time to build a loco from scratch.

As a prototype I have chosen CIÉ "Pat" a Steam powered shed on wheels. Originally a tender from another scrapped loco it was equipped with a vertical boiler De Winton style and a steam engine coupled to the wheels by gears. Despite being cobbled together it remained in service for 50 years.

(it's not a video it's an image captured from a youtube video, one of only two photos of Pat. I have no idea what the internal arrangement was, the gears can just be seen in one photo. I may use a De Winton loco as a starting point.

That is an interesting loco and a great project. I an looking forward to seeing this progress.

I do have a problem reading your post on this subject as it is much, much wider than the screen image and I have to move the text right and left to read it. Occasionally it happens on other posts from various members, although not always from the same members, or in the same thread. Is there something 'built in' to the system which causes this? ... Perhaps one of our moderators might be able to assist?

I have seen a pic of this beastie before and I have just spent twenty minutes trying to find the book that it is in with no luck.

I think it was propelled by a pair of vertical cylinders driving just a single axle (so it was a 2-2-0) This may have been liberated from a scrap steam lorry. I believe it spent all its working life at Glanmire Rd. Depot. I also have a feeling it was (Irish) std. gauge, not 3ft.

When (if) I find the book I will post more info.

I think it is a fascinating little engine and would make a cracking model, albeit a very small one.

Sorry that was my fault one of the pictures was much too big. I have reduced it. Hope that helps.

Hmm yes, perhaps a little too small if I model it to true scale. Some latitude will have to be taken.

That's an interesting loco, I take it that this will be built to run on 45mm gauge, are you thinking narrow gauge scale or standard gauge scale??

Thanks, that has gone to normal viewing now, funny how some posts are wider than others though.

I think it could be a done. But perhaps as a ng version. Have a look at Dave Watkins' website. His de Winton plans may be suitable for adapting. Another adaptable one could be Cracker. You can make the boilers for these out of plumbing fittings.
It would certainly be a bit of an oddity. Possibly unique.

That's not a bad call on the Dave Watkins plans, as the arrangement inside the body wouldn't be dissimilar to the prototype
