May 2016 - from Butterley to Port Erin
Sunday was a lovely warm early summer day - it certainly couldn't be wasted. And it turns out that as of last November, TrentBarton had introduced a new regular bus that goes rapidly from Derby city centre to Butterley [stopping right outside Midland Rail Centre] in 25mins flat - "The Comet". So, I decided to try this and get a good day's running in...
The Isle of Man Steam Railway stock being prepared as now finally complete for service after trials.
Transfers applied and lower footboards removed to make transporting them easier, as well as to reduce chances of being obstructed by foilage or gravel. All four coaches similarly treated, but the new brake coach cameas sold without the lower footwell.
Simmering on shed
Little John on roll..
Both trains now out...contrasting indeed.
From Douglas to Port Erin, calling at Port Soderick, Ballasalla, Castletown and St. Marys - also showing the customised Brake vehicle as bought at Peterborough with its black ends, pipes, lamp hangar and lamp as well as roof decoration.
In full steam, showing off the now complete "Isle of Man Trainset" of rebuilt loco and matching carriages, all ready for continuous service. The other two 'sets' are a brake bogie and three wheelsets from completion, respectively.
Butterley - or Ramsey?
Two locos in steam
Little John up close
Vixen again
Balloon Loop Hill - or Sulby Glen?
This Regner came out to play
This rather resplendent Russell was on duty
Alco on tips
Willi again
Willi in the forest
Mountain scene - express passenger train and a dieselworking high up
On shed
Full rake
Little John coming out again after diesel fuel
Victory on afternoon goods
Afternoon life, as Russell and Alco were both running freights on the Main, hurrying to and fro
Little John on tippers
Fee Fi Fo Fum, I smell the burning meths off a loco's bum...
Russell again...
Vixen doing the final return of the day back from Port Erin...
While Alco cleared up the yards for home...
Calling in at Ballasalla
Victory cooling down
Victory cooling down
Vixen on shed after a day's work
Hope you enjoyed!

Where on earth did those dual scale points come from? I have been after some of those since deciding to build a railway some 5 years ago and never found any
The buck stops here .......

I was thinking they had to be hand built. I don't suppose there are any plans for them kicking around?MDLR:117970 wrote:They were built by a Butterley member especially for the job, and thay were PIGS!-steves-:117969 wrote:Where on earth did those dual scale points come from? Thanks Gralyn. It is a nice running line, decent length and a number of photographic opportunities. The vegetation adds an extra dimension to the background and is lovingly cared for by members of the Assocation.Gralyn:117963 wrote:Great Photos. I like Butterly too. It is even better once the vegetation gets into full bloom.
Will you be in Wales for this year's Talyllyn Gala?
Hi Brian, not a problem -throw in a couple of my 'Vixen' and we have a deal.MDLR:117968 wrote:Like most gardens, it looks at its best in the spring.Gralyn:117963 wrote:Great Photos. I like Butterley too. It is even better once the vegetation gets into full bloom.
Doug - I've nicked a couple of shots of Victory for the Butterley web site - hope you don't mind!

Well, there is the fact that it is running from Friday to Sunday, so, three days to squeeze everything and a good run on Llechfan in?Gralyn:117977 wrote:Re Talyllyn Gala 2016. Quite probably, it is such a great event though if you want the whole experience ( a good lunch and a trip up the line and back all in one day) it means only one half hour steaming session. Or is there something I am missing.
